In defence of plants

Trees, the planet's lungs, providing us with shade, food, delight, shelter and inspiration. Perhaps one of the lesser thoughts about effects of light pollution is the effect it has on trees and plants. Green plants and trees feed themselves via the process of photosynthesis, the transformation of light into chemical energy. 

Artificial light can trick a tree into thinking the days are longer, confusing it as to when to drop leaves or to produce buds too early both of which can lead to the demise of the tree.

The image below shows delayed leaf drop under the street light. In climates where the build-up of snow and ice are a challenge and the extra weight where they would sit on the leaves can cause the branches to break and leave it susceptible to disease. The article below goes into more detail
